X-Men: This Odd Days Of Future Past Mystery Is Finally Solved
The X-Men franchise has a lot of great things going for it. Over the past 20 years or so, they’ve brought a lot of laughs, thrills, and tears — not to mention its fair share of frustration and random plot twists. However, if there is one thing it HASN’T brought to the table, it’s continuity.
Sure, there is some thin bits of connection between the movies, but for every one thing that carries over, there are 17 others that don’t quite line up. You can blame some of the events of films like X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine for that. They attempted to tie up some loose ends with the release of X-Men: Days of Future Past, but ultimately said “screw it.”
With that in mind, here was one mystery I was never expecting to get solved. At the end of Days of Future Past, we see William Stryker doing stuff, only for there to be a moment where his eyes turn yellow, hinting at the fact that it’s actually Mystique in disguise. As expected, this twist never pays off…but what did it mean? Director Bryan Singer recently took to Instagram to give some much-needed insight, saying:
“I caught your question on #reddit I have to be honest, the idea to have #stryker ‘s eyes turn yellow was added to the film very close to its completion. However, I ended up liking it because it showed #mystique ‘s path of secretly helping mutants. In that case #wolverine It is a path that continues into #xmenapocalypse”
All in all, this seems to confirm that they rarely seem to care about making a connected world and only work to make each film as good individually as they can. While fans are more used to seeing scenes set up future films, this one was all about showing a character moment for someone in that moment. I guess we should have known that, given how intuitive it really is.
