Somethings…

Do you ever wonder what the expression “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue…” stands for?

It is said a million times per year during the wedding preparations, it is printed and used in wedding decorations such as signs and banners, ribbons. It is written under the bridal shoes and it has also become a wedding song!

But the four somethings have a meaning, as they are taken from a rhyme that appears to originate in England in the late 1800's!

Something old is the first line which details what a bride should wear at her wedding for good luck and shows continuity (целостность).

The something old and something blue are devices to baffle the Evil Eye and “blue” stands for purity, fidelity (верность), and love.

Something new shows optimism for the future and is usually bought or created by the bride herself, to carry with her on the day of the wedding.

Something borrowed should properly be the undergarment of some woman who has been blessed with children: the clothes communicate fertility to the bride for example, but what it really symbolizes is borrowed happiness.

Generally what the tradition is all about: the four objects that the bride adds to her wedding outfit or carries with her on her wedding day and are usually good luck charms or family treasures that the grandmother, the mother, the sister or a friend of the bride gives her.

Tradition is always welcome to be followed during the wedding. All these bridal superstitions were to add a little extra karma (здесь: дух, настроение, общая атмосфера) to the special day!
