IELTS Essay Sample: contact aliens

Many scientists believe that intelligent life forms may exist on other planets and some want to send messages into space to contact these life forms. Other scientists think that this is a bad idea because these life forms could be dangerous. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

It is thought by the scientific community that intelligent living creatures might populate other planets. Although some scientists believe that humanity should reach out to them, particularly in the form of messages, others claim that it may turn out to be unsafe for our society. Ultimately, I somewhat agree that these life forms ought to be contacted from the Earth, as it may be profitable in terms of new knowledge and resources; however, the procedure must follow safety requirements.

From one point of view, starting a conversation with aliens may have a beneficial effect on people. This is in part due to the chance to learn from them. For example, they may share experiences on overcoming natural hazards, developing alternative sources of energy, and organising social institutions. Likewise, our space neighbours may offer their technologies and resources in exchange for those from the Earth. Indeed, new trade opportunities have always been favourable for any economy, making it affluent and stable.

Danger, from another perspective, may also occur from contacting extraterrestrials. The aforementioned life forms may turn out to be bellicose and aggressive. This, in turn, would lead to interspacious conflict and expose the Earth to the risk of a hazardous war. Therefore, top-ranked diplomacy is imperative to ensure the promising prospects of relationship. Also, the composition of a natural world on different planets is not the same, which may cause infection with life-threatening viruses and bacteria on both planets. This may be overcome with an accurate approach to all contact procedures (researching, testing in advance).

In conclusion, I tend to favour the position that scientists should contact other planets. Not only is this advisable in terms of acquiring new knowledge, but also the economy will benefit from exchanging products and services.
