How to Practice Present Perfect (1-2-1 online)

Present Perfect is my favourite tense in English.

We use Present Perfect to say about our accomplishments, tell about life experiences, complain about unrealised ambitions and just share some interesting news with your friends. I think this is the most used tense in English.

It’s not so difficult to teach Present Perfect in terms of MFP. But many teachers complain they don’t have a lot of ideas about how to practice it. Most of activities they find in Google are far away from real life topics and conversations.

Here’s an activity I use to practice PP with my students.

People like to write New Year Resolutions and most of us make a list at the beginning of January. A list of things we plan to do in the year which has just started.

I ask my student to recall this list in their memory and write down their plans and wishes. Now it’s November and the year is going to end soon. I ask them to think about things they have done already and also thing they haven’t done. I share my list with them as well and ask them some questions in PP (How many books have you read? Have you travelled abroad?) I encourage them to ask similar questions to me as well.

So here you can work on all three forms (positive, negative, questions) and this activity shows students they can say about things they accomplished some time ago but still use a Present Tense. Because when they share their accomplishments it’s not so important when they did it, the most important thing is if they have or haven’t done.

If you have read up to here, then get a surprise. Hit the link to find more real life activities for Present Perfect from https://busyteacher.org/13636-present-perfect-7-perfect-act
