The street was named on June 7, 1922, after the tsar's Cannon Yard (XV—XVIII centuries), which was located here.Where cannons and bells were cast (in 1586, a Tsar cannon weighing about 40 tons was cast here by the master Andrei Chokhov).
On the plan of the Cannon Yard and the surrounding area of the XVII century, part of the modern Cannon Street (between the Neglinnaya River and Rozhdestvenka Street) is indicated as Ekimanskaya Street — according to the church of Joachim and Anna (has not been preserved).
In the 19th century, the street (already in its modern course) was called Sofiyka — after the church of Sophia of the Wisdom of God
The original wooden church was built at the end of the XV century by immigrants from Novgorod; rebuilt in stone in 1692.
Pushechnaya Street starts from Neglinnaya, runs east, crosses Rozhdestvenka and goes out onto Lubyanka Square.
The length of the street is only 370 meters.
