Royal Musketeers (France)
A select noble company for personal protection was created by King Henry IV in 1600. His son Louis XIII replaced light carbines with muskets, after which the famous royal musketeers appeared. Initially there were only 100 plus seven officers. Formally, the king himself was considered the captain. The real leadership was carried out by Lieutenant Commander Comte de Treville, a Gascon by birth. Therefore, the company was mainly composed of Gascons. The natives of this southern province were famous for their warlike spirit, so that suited everyone. The main value for the musketeer was the prestige of the service - at the expense of the treasury they were given only a musket, everything else, from a sword to a horse, had to be bought on their own. But the musketeers were always with the king, carrying guards in the palace, and also accompanying the monarch on campaigns. After the death of Louis XIII, the company was temporarily abolished. After the revival, it was headed by the famous d'Artagnan, the prototype of the character in Dumas' novels. Under him, the number grew to 250 people. The company turned into a kind of military academy, in which nobles from all over Europe aspired to undergo an internship. Further, the second was added to the first company. Over time, the musketeers finally became the palace guards, and not a combat unit. They spent most of their time on the Parisian streets, impressing those around them with the luxury of outfits and freedom of morals. The royal musketeers were liquidated at the end of the reign of Louis XV for banal reasons of economy.
