English text:There are many beautiful places in the world. Today we will tell you about Lake Baikal.
Baikal is the deepest lake on the planet. It is a natural freshwater reservoir and the largest fresh water lake on the continent by area. It has the shape of a giant crescent with a length of 636 km.
The area of the lake is 31,722 km2, which is approximately equal to the area of countries such as Belgium or Netherlands.
Maximum depth: 1,642 m, which is 5 times the height of the Eiffel Tower.
If you want to go around Lake Baikal along the shore, you will have to walk 2100 km.
There is more water in Baikal than in all five Great Lakes combined North America (Upper, Michigan, Huron, Erie, Ontario). This is about 19% of the world's total reserves of lake fresh water. The water in Baikal contains very few minerals and there is a lot of oxygen in it, so it can be used as distilled.
Scientists believe that the age of the lake is 25-35 million years.
700-year-old larches and 600-year-old cedars grow on the coast. As many as 336 rivers and streams flow into Lake Baikal, and only one flows out — the Angara. If suddenly the lake stopped being fed by water from rivers, and the Angara continued to flow, it would take 400 years for all the water from the lake to go away.
The water in the lake is cold — from +4 °C to +9 °C.
The water in the lake is so transparent that individual stones and various objects are visible at a depth of up to 40 meters. This usually happens in spring, when the water in the lake is blue. In summer and autumn, when a mass of plant and animal organisms develops in the sun-warmed water, its transparency decreases to 8-10 m, and the color becomes blue-green and green.
There are 27 islands on Lake Baikal . The largest of them is Olkhon (71 km long and 12 km wide, located almost in the center of the lake near its western coast).
Why does the lake have such a name? One of the theories about the origin of the name of the lake says that it came from the Yakut baikhal, baigal "sea", "big, deep water". The former Russian name of Lake Baikal is "The Holy Sea". On Chinese maps and descriptions, the lake is called "Baihe" — the "North Sea"
Lake with a coastal zone is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Attractions:
One of the most famous animals in Buryatia is the seal. At sunset, you can see how the seals begin to move en masse to the islands. These animals are curious and sometimes swim up to drifting vessels. They swim side by side for a long time and constantly come out of the water.
The most picturesque places are Sandy Bay and Olkhon Island.
Winter Baikal attracts tourists with its special, fabulous beauty: snow-covered mountain ranges, transparent ice sparkling in the sun, grottoes, intricate ice sculptures and sculptures created by nature itself. They say about such ice: "it's terribly beautiful." And really, to realize that there are hundreds of meters of water under your feet, and you are standing on ice, transparent as glass, which seems so fragile and at any moment... but in fact, the ice under you is about a meter thick, capable of withstanding the weight of a car. You can make a trip on the ice of Lake Baikal on a hovercraft.
There are also horse riding and hiking. At various sites around the lake passes The Great Baikal Trail is a system of ecological trails and one of the ways for tourists to see the unique nature, views and panoramas of Lake Baikal.
