An Ancient Door


The dark brown of the door, with its iron hinges and large crude studs, presumably medieval nails, made it stand out in this modern, freshly decorated interior.
It looked heavy. Ancient.
It was worn below the hanging ring that served as doorknob.
It also looked decidedly locked.
John hesitated – he'd have to tiptoe across this dimly-lit room, hoping not to elicit a sound from any of the floorboards.
But he could see no other way out. The sash windows were sure to rattle as they went up – and besides, then he'd be out in the courtyard of the house. The movement-sensor lights would come on, as they had done when he'd pulled up on the thick gravel yesterday.
Back when he was a welcome guest.
