My college offers a volunteering trip to Anapa to clean oil spills. I would like to join this program to help with the oil cleanup on the beaches. In December 2024 two old tankers were damaged in a storm in the Kerch Strait spilling heavy fuel oil known as mazut. This oil has covered over 60 kilometers of coastline including Anapa’s beaches with sticky oil which is hard to remove. In December 2024 and January 2025 over 10,000 people including volunteers worked to remove the mazut collecting over 173,000 tonnes of polluted sand. They used shovels and gloves to clear the sticky oil but the work is slow due to weather changes. This trip could be a good experience. I could learn how to clean mazut spills and help make beaches clean again.
