Buckenbard's first life was lost when he was just a kitten. He was playing too close to a busy street and was hit by a passing car. Fortunately, a kind passerby picked him up and took him to the vet, where he was saved by emergency surgery.

His second life was lost when he chased a squirrel up a tall tree and couldn't find his way down. He was stuck there for three days, feeding on rainwater and tree bark, until a friendly neighbor heard his cries and came to his aid.

A third life was lost when he clashed with a group of angry dogs. He barely escaped, but not without suffering several serious injuries. His owner cared for him until he recovered, but after that Buckenbard was never the same again.

A fourth life was lost when Buckenbard got into a fight with a much larger cat. He made a valiant effort, but the other cat was too strong and too skilled. Buckenbard barely got out of there alive and spent weeks recovering from his injuries.

A fifth life was lost when he fell into a pond and could not swim. His owner heard his cries for help and fished him out, but not before he had swallowed a lot of water and was in danger of drowning.

A sixth life was lost when he climbed onto the roof of his owner's house and slipped on rickety shingles. He rolled down several floors before he landed in a pile on the ground. Miraculously, he survived with only a broken leg.

A seventh life was lost when he ate a poisonous plant in the backyard. His owner rushed him to the vet, but it was too late to save him. Buckenbard died on the operating table, but was revived after a few minutes of CPR.

An eighth life was lost when he got stuck in a clothes dryer. His owner accidentally left the door open, and Buckenbard jumped in to deal with it. The machine started, and poor Buckenbard was tossed around like a sock in a washing machine. When the cycle ended, he was barely alive.

After all these mishaps, Buckenbard began to realize the fragility of life. He spent his ninth life appreciating every moment, snoozing in the sunshine, playing with his toys and cuddling with his master. He no longer risked or sought danger, but instead enjoyed the simple pleasures of being a cat.

When Buckenbard finally passed away at the end of his ninth life, he did so peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by his owner's love. Although he had wasted eight of his lives, Buckenbard had learned to appreciate life and lived his last years to the fullest.
