Just want to note the size of the novel. Almost 1300 pages of tiny font. I read it for two weeks, and then for several days I could not gather my thoughts together. ⠀
I was absolutely devastated - he made such a strong impression on me.
The novel covers events over 12 years (from 1861 to 1873), developing against the background of the civil war between the northern industrial and southern agricultural states of America.
In the center of the plot is young Scarlett O'Hara and her difficult relationships with men and herself. ⠀
Scarlett has a complex personality. She is selfish, spoiled, calculating and totally empathic.
Which is not surprising to some extent. From childhood, she grew up as the heiress of a rich estate, was surrounded by the love and care of her parents and numerous servants. In a word, a very frivolous person is spoiled. All that worries her: to be in the spotlight, whatever the cost; grooms and outfits. ⠀
But everything changes when Ratt Butler comes to her house, and the war is in her native land. ⠀
The conscription of all men, bombing, hunger, marauders, the struggle for survival and fear of death became Scarlett's constant companions for several years. ⠀
If you want to live, be able to spin. And Scarlett turns like a mixer. ⠀
She changes one man after another, so as not to just survive, to live with dignity, at a time when love for a completely different person is glimmering in her tiny heart. ⠀
You will hate the main character and admire her at the same time.
This is a unique novel. It is full of many events and characters of absolutely motley nature.
Will I recommend this book to anyone? No. ⠀
This is a very difficult work from which I made two conclusions: "war never changes" and "what we have - we do not keep, having lost - we cry."
Nevertheless, for me this is the best book of the year. ⠀
I will reread this novel many more times, as it is a treasure trove of important thoughts about life, love, family, friendship and sacrifice.
