The boundaries of the city of Lake City have changed several times since the founding of the town.

Local leaders incorporated the town as a village in 1835. The village was renamed Lyonsville in 1841, but soon shortened to Lake City and then Lake County after the federal Civil War. The name was not changed until 1968 after voters approve renaming the city to honor Justice Edward Lyon of Alabama.
