5 (ultrasound) signs of thyroid cancer

(At the bottom of the article there is a film about the real history of diagnosing cancer in the thyroid gland. With the story of the case history from the patient herself!)

Over the past two decades, ultrasound specialists have gradually determined the exact signs of thyroid cancer. A large number of cases of malignancy have been investigated. Some symptoms occurred in both cancer and benign process. But as a result, an international team of experts came to clear criteria for cancer.

Cancer in the thyroid gland is determined only in the nodes! If there are no nodes, then whatever changes in the thyroid gland, in that case there can be no cancer.

Professional thyroid gland ultrasound can be done in the “Clinic of the thyroid gland” Dr. A.V. Ushakov. Book an appointment by phone. +7 495 346 20 38.

1. The first sign of node cancer.

The fuzzy, uneven border of the node around its perimeter. This feature must be determined by a doctor with an ultrasound of the thyroid gland in all ultrasound projections. To this end, the doctor holds the sensor from top to bottom (from the head to the legs) and from the center to the side.

It is important to distinguish the boundary and contour of the node. The border can be clear, and the contour is not defined, be subtle, or detected in some places. The border may be "vague" in any place. The latter is a sign of cancer.

The contour can be significantly wavy, very strongly protruding in one of the places of the node. In this case, you can suspect the likelihood of cancer.

2. The second sign of cancer site.

Expressed dark (hypoechoic) tissue node. This symptom of thyroid nodule cancer indicates an accumulation of actively proliferating cells.

But not every blackout in a node is a symptom of cancer. The area of darkening in case of cancer of the thyroid nodule has uneven and fuzzy edges. In it the phenomena of growth of ordinary tissue (polyps) can be determined.

3. The third sign of nodular cancer.

Inside the node with cancer often white dotted (hyperechoic) inclusions - microcalcinates occur. This symptom requires expert attention to itself, since similar signs are benign inclusions of a colloid or compaction of the connective tissue. Therefore, some ultrasound doctors may mistakenly take benign phenomena as a sign of cancer.

In addition to microcalcifications, ordinary calcinates can be detected inside the node. These formations are visible as bright white large points from which a dark shadow spreads (ultrasound is delayed by compaction of calcium). But these calcinates are also found in the benign process in the thyroid gland.

4. The fourth sign of cancer.

The shape of the node in cancer may be incorrect, i.e. significantly different from spherical and elliptical. In this case, the largest size of the three (in three projections) is located across the lobes.

and finally ...

5. The fifth sign of thyroid cancer.

Very active and mixed (around and inside the node) blood flow.

All these 5 signs of thyroid cancer alone are of little certainty. But the combination of these signs significantly increases the likelihood of cancer in the node.

Supervise your doctor. Require the ultrasound specialist (sonologist) to indicate in the Ultrasound Protocol of all five signs or their absence.

The fact is that many experts neglect duties. Some do not report three sizes of the node, others - do not write about the blood flow, others - about the form and the largest size, etc.
