Thirty-seven years ago, the cult First Blood, a very brave mixture of action movie and social drama, was released. Due to the fact that the script had a strong literary basis, the protagonist John Rambo turned out to be not just a killing machine, but a deep tragic character. Unfortunately, the popularity of the picture played a cruel joke with her: the studio wanted to make money on the sequels, although this story, they certainly did not need it. As a result, we got a couple of stupid action movies and even a cartoon series (!).
Finally, in 2007, Sylvester Stallone seemed to personally retire the hero, along the way arranged on the screen the most fierce meat grinder outside the horror. But no, twelve years later, the quiet old man Rambo took up arms, as the name promises, for the last time.
John did return to his native Arizona. Now he lives in his parents' house in the company of his father's maid and her niece, breeds horses and stays away from civilization. But the military past has left deep wounds. The survivor's complex makes us help local rescuers, paranoia - digging fortified tunnels under the site. And the years go by - Rambo, beaten with his life, sits firmly on pills. But when a young girl gets into trouble, only an elderly veteran can save her.

It was clear from the trailer what niche the filmmakers were marking. The old hero, gloomy looking in a mirror, kinds of the American countryside, minor country hit on a background - all unequivocally referred to recent "Logan". The orientation is clear and correct: it is an exemplary example of how to finish the stories of cult characters. But in practice it turned out that "Rambo" does not have much in common with the picture of James Mangold: in the plot of the "Last Blood" is much easier, if not more primitive.
Before us is an extremely old-fashioned action movie about revenge. And if modern representatives of the genre, such as "John Wick" or "The Great Equalizer", somehow change or complement the familiar formula, "Rambo" and does not try. There's even a charm in it: here's a nice girl, here's the nasty bandits who offended her, but the hero who will punish them all - nothing extra. Pure and honest manipulation of basic spectator emotions.
