Better Call Saul’s Bob Odenkirk Not Excited To See Jimmy’s Transformation Into Saul

Watching Better Call Saul is like watching a veeery slow train wreck — and when I say that, I don’t mean in the typical bad way the expression implies, but rather in the way that we know that this train is headed for disaster and having to watch as it slowly heads in that direction. Despite the character’s mistakes in his past, he does seem to be trying to do the right thing, only to be continually guided to do the opposite.

With the impending fourth season, we see him skewing closer and closer to that character we met in Breaking Bad. Given that it’s all leading up to this, you’d imagine that lead actor Bob Odenkirk is ready to see this culmination come to fruition, right? Not so much, as the actor revealed to EW.

“They made him such a likable guy, and yet kept it organic. It’s not a completely different person, but I really like the guy. I’m having to confront the fact that he is becoming Saul, and I don’t like Saul. If he was my friend, I would say, ‘Don’t go that route.’”

With that in mind, it makes sense that Odenkirk was initially hesitant to taking on the role again in a spin-off series to begin with.

“My first question when we talked was, ‘How do you make him likable?’ Because I didn’t like that guy. I mean, I like watching him — like a car wreck when you’re not in it. It’s intriguing. It pulls you in. But he’s a bad guy.”

That’s especially interesting, as one of the big rules of acting is never to judge your character. It goes to show that line of what Odenkirk thinks is or isn’t moral, which I find incredibly interesting.
